State and Territory governments have signed an agreement to make
the Australian Maritime Safety Authority
(AMSA) the National Regulator for the National
System for Commercial Vessel Safety from 2013.
As part of the agreement AMSA will also from 2013
assume the functions of commercial vessel maritime standards
maintenance and development currently conducted by the National
Maritime Safety Committee (NMSC).
In order to begin the process of transition, the NMSC
recently decided to relocate the secretariat function of the NMSC
to AMSA in Canberra and to close the NMSC's Sydney
Office from 31 October 2011.
This relocation will not affect the ongoing work of the
NMSC.
In fact, the NMSC is confident these reforms
will continue to deliver an efficient national approach to
commercial vessel safety. The development and maintenance of
the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) will continue
in close consultation with industry and state/territory maritime
authorities using the same processes as before.
A new body, the Australian Recreational Boating Safety
Committee, has also taken over the role of NMSC in
the recreational vessel sector this year.
