To all seafarers affiliates

ITF E-Circular No. 008/E.7/S.3/2012

Our Ref: S/JPW/nm

17 January 2012

Dear Friends

Online piracy poll

The November 2011 Seafarers' Section Committee agreed that the
ITF should conduct a poll amongst seafarers to assess their
attitudes to piracy and a small working group was set up to
finalise the survey text. The poll will be undertaken using
web based software and will be open until 31 March 2012.

In order to facilitate seafarers with completing the poll it has
already been translated into a number of key languages by the
concerned ITF affiliated seafarers' unions, this should mean that
it will be easier for seafarers from the most heavily impacted
countries to participate. The websites can be accessed at:

It may be possible to translate the survey into additional
languages if it means that response levels will be significantly
affected.

Please ensure that your members are aware of this initiative and
strongly urge them to participate in the survey.

Yours fraternally

The Australian Maritime Officers Union expresses its deepest
condolences to the family and friends of John Gordon, former
President and Secretary of the Victorian Tasmanian Branch of the
AIMPE, who sadly passed away on 6 January. John was committed to
not only improving the working conditions of marine engineers, but
all seafarers, especially seafarers engaged in the tug industry.
John was notorious for vessel inspections, always armed with
his sound metre, ensuring seafarers were not exposed to more than
80dB. For many years, he worked with the officials of the AMOU and
the SUA on the Victorian Marine Board; safe guarding the welfare of
seafarers, encouraging career / training opportunities and
promoting the Port of Melbourne.
